Questions
The parts store will read my code. Why pay $75?
A code points at a system. P0171 (running lean) could be a vacuum leak, a dirty airflow sensor or a weak fuel pump, and guessing gets expensive. We test first, and the $75 comes off the repair if we do it.
What if I take the findings somewhere else?
That's fine. The findings are yours, and the $75 just pays for the diagnosis.
Can you just clear the light?
We can, but that only turns the light off. If the fault is still there, it'll come back on.
